The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has called for stricter oversight within public institutions following the conclusion of its interim investigation into the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), describing the case as a lesson on the need for stronger safeguards against impersonation and document fraud.
The commission said the investigation exposed weaknesses in the verification of official documents and public claims of government appointments. It stressed that agencies must strengthen internal procedures to ensure that only duly authorised officials are recognised in dealings involving the Federal Government.
According to the ICPC, the investigation established that the purported council had no legal foundation and was not recognised by any law or executive instrument. The commission further stated that no evidence was found linking the Presidency to the activities of the organisation, reaffirming that government records did not support claims that the council was officially constituted.
The anti-corruption agency noted that the outcome of the investigation would assist other security and law enforcement agencies in identifying individuals who may have collaborated in promoting or facilitating the activities of the alleged fake council. It added that anyone found to have knowingly participated in the scheme would face the full weight of the law.
The commission also encouraged Nigerians to verify claims of government appointments, programmes and agencies through official government channels before engaging with individuals or organisations claiming federal authority. It said public vigilance remains essential in preventing fraud carried out under the guise of government institutions.
As investigations continue, the ICPC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting accountability, transparency and integrity in public administration, stating that the findings of the probe will guide further actions aimed at protecting the credibility of government institutions and restoring public confidence in official processes.
